A POCSO court in Thoothukudi has sentenced Dharmamuneeswaran to death in the case involving the sexual assault and murder of a Class 12 school student near Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district.

According to the case details, the student went out to attend nature’s call and later went missing. Her body was subsequently recovered from a forest area, and investigations found that she had been sexually assaulted and killed.

The incident, which occurred on March 10 ahead of the Assembly elections, triggered widespread attention. Police arrested Dharmamuneeswaran and lodged him in Madurai prison.

The trial was conducted at the Thoothukudi district POCSO court, where 71 witnesses were examined. After the proceedings over the past two months concluded, Judge Preetha delivered the verdict on May 25, awarding the death sentence to the accused.
