Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada is in talks with India on a free trade agreement, describing the effort as a potential turning point for Canadian workers and businesses.
The remarks came as India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal arrived in Canada on a three-day official visit to discuss a trade pact and bilateral investment opportunities. More than 100 representatives from Indian companies are part of the delegation.
Goyal met Carney in Ottawa for discussions on strengthening ties between the two countries. Sharing a photo of the meeting on social media, Carney said both sides are moving quickly and are reviewing progress made so far.
Carney added that the talks also covered ways to deepen cooperation in sectors such as energy, agri-food, technology and education. In his own post, Goyal said he conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and held forward-looking discussions, including on the ongoing free trade negotiations.
