The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 9.91 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for June 2026, to be ensured at Biligundlu in line with Supreme Court directions.

The CWMA’s 51st meeting was held in New Delhi on May 26 in a hybrid format. Tamil Nadu officials participated through video conference from the Secretariat, according to a state government note.

During the meeting, Tamil Nadu reiterated that the June allocation must be released at Biligundlu as mandated. The state also objected to Karnataka’s contention that “excess” flows should be counted toward its obligation, arguing that water discharged due to inability to store cannot be claimed as a planned release.

Tamil Nadu cited the India Meteorological Department’s assessment that the southwest monsoon was expected to begin over Kerala on May 26 and that rainfall could be normal. Considering the anticipated inflows into Karnataka’s reservoirs, the state urged the authority to ensure the June release.

Following the deliberations, the CWMA issued the order directing Karnataka to release the stipulated 9.91 TMC to Tamil Nadu for June.
