A tense political standoff in Perambalur district’s Kunnam constituency escalated into violence on Monday after supporters of the DMK and the VCK gathered for rival demonstrations despite police refusing permission.
According to the police, both parties had sought approval to hold protests in Kunnam on the same day—VCK cadres planned to condemn remarks attributed to DMK deputy general secretary Raja, while DMK supporters sought to protest against VCK district secretary Anbanandham for his criticism of DMK leaders. Citing the risk of a clash, police denied permission to both.
However, around 11 am, groups from both sides assembled near the Kunnam Government Higher Secondary School. As slogans were raised against Raja and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, an argument broke out and soon turned into a physical confrontation, with stones, wooden sticks and even footwear reportedly thrown.
Police carried out a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and brought the situation under control. A DMK social media wing functionary, Ramesh, sustained swelling on the head and was treated at the Perambalur Government Hospital. During the commotion, DSP Mayilvaganam fell to the ground but was not injured.
Tensions were also reported in Perambalur town, where DMK and VCK supporters attempted protests and clashes broke out. In separate statements, Raja appealed against violence, while VCK treasurer S.S. Balaji demanded immediate action against those who attacked VCK cadres during what he described as a lawful protest.
