Chennai: A report has claimed that senior Supreme Court advocate and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi is working in the background of the resignations by disgruntled AIADMK MLAs in Tamil Nadu.
The report says that after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, sent Singhvi to Chennai. It adds that, based on his advice, Chief Minister Vijay formed the government with the support of the VCK, the Indian Union Muslim League and the Communist parties.
According to the report, Governor Rajendra Arlekar had said he would invite a party to form the government only after being assured of majority support. Singhvi is said to have strongly objected, insisting that when no one has a clear majority, the party with the highest seats should be invited first.
The report further claims that the ruling party is now seeking to increase its MLA strength, citing the possibility of pressure from the Communist parties. It says Singhvi advised that if the party wins by-elections in constituencies vacated by resignations and crosses the 118 mark, the government would be difficult to destabilise for five years.
It adds that this aggressive political approach has unsettled not only the AIADMK but also the DMK and PMK, with DMK leaders fearing that some alliance MLAs elected on the DMK symbol, and even some within the DMK, could be drawn towards the ruling camp.
