Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress is facing fresh turbulence in West Bengal after suffering a heavy defeat in the recent Assembly election. In the days that followed, more than 100 councillors from local bodies have reportedly stepped down one after another.
The report said the BJP won 208 seats and formed the government for the first time, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as Chief Minister. The change in power ended the Trinamool’s 15-year rule under Mamata Banerjee.
Resignations have been reported from multiple municipalities. In Bhatpara, 30 of 35 councillors are said to have quit, while in nearby Halisahar, 16 of 23 councillors have resigned. Similar exits were reported from areas including Garulia and North Barrackpore.
Even Diamond Harbour—considered a stronghold of Trinamool general secretary Abhishek Banerjee—has seen resignations, with eight of the 16 councillors submitting their letters. Political observers cited fear of investigations and arrests linked to allegations such as corruption and “cut money” practices, saying the developments are shaking the party’s grassroots structure.
