Electric vehicle (EV) sales are picking up pace in Coimbatore, with 5,268 electric two-wheelers registered at RTO offices over the past four-and-a-half months, according to official figures.

The rise comes amid concerns of global crude oil shortage linked to the Iran–US conflict. With the Centre advising fuel-saving measures, many buyers are increasingly looking at EVs as an alternative to petrol-powered vehicles.

Vehicle dealers’ associations said EV sales across the country rose by about 40% in April alone, while production has also doubled. Buyers are reportedly placing advance bookings for e-bikes and waiting through delivery delays, attracted by warranty coverage and higher mileage.

Businesses, too, are purchasing more battery-powered vehicles for goods transport. RTO officials in Coimbatore said the district has seen a clear increase in electric two-wheeler sales and expect the trend to continue.

Registration data shows that last year Coimbatore recorded 7,430 two-wheelers, 1,681 light motor vehicles and 352 other vehicles. From January 1 this year, registrations stand at 5,268 two-wheelers, 1,030 light motor vehicles and 269 other vehicles across the district’s RTO offices.
