Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday remembered freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary, saying Savarkar’s courage and patriotism would continue to inspire people.
In a social media message, Modi also highlighted Savarkar’s intellect and noted the importance he gave to social reform.
Several leaders marked the day with tributes online. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Savarkar dedicated his life to serving the nation and strongly opposed social evils such as untouchability, describing his commitment as a guide for all.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid respects to Savarkar, calling him not only a nationalist thinker but also an effective speaker, poet and philosopher, and said he endured hardships while dedicating his life to India’s freedom.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Savarkar faced inhuman torture for the country’s freedom and added that his struggle, courage and dedication to national interest would be remembered.
