New Delhi: As intense summer heat grips large parts of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to take precautions and drink plenty of water.

Several states, including Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, are experiencing severe heat, with many cities recording temperatures above 45°C. The heatwave has affected people across age groups, from children to the elderly.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Modi said rising temperatures are causing daily hardships and called on citizens to stay alert. He advised people to carry water when stepping out, avoid dehydration and increase water intake.

He also asked people not to ignore warning signs such as dizziness, vomiting or extreme fatigue, noting that delayed attention can lead to heatstroke. He said children, senior citizens and those working outdoors are among the most vulnerable.

Modi added that animals and birds should not be forgotten during the scorching summer, and suggested keeping a small bowl of water on terraces, balconies and outside offices to help them.
