Chennai: In the last 15 days, 13 police personnel, including five inspectors, have been placed under suspension following a series of allegations and complaints.

One case cited was from Sivagiri police station in Tenkasi district, where a 63-year-old farmer, Anthoniraj, who had approached the station over a land dispute, was allegedly tortured during inquiry. He later died by suicide, after which Inspector Muralidharan and head constables Kanagaraj and Muthukkannan were suspended.

In Chennai, Armed Reserve Inspector Marimuthu and sub-inspectors Thirumurugan and Sellathurai were suspended for allegedly showing favour and taking money in connection with a rowdy, Vellaikaali, who is lodged in Puzhal prison and is said to be involved in more than 30 cases, including nine murders.

In Sivaganga district, Devakottai town police station Inspector Durairaj, women’s police station Inspector Geethalakshmi, and sub-inspectors Jaya and Rajeshwari were suspended for allegedly failing to act on a complaint by a 35-year-old woman against an auto driver and causing her mental distress. A special branch policeman, Santhanakrishnan, was also suspended for allegedly not informing the SP about negligent policing.

Separately, Inspector Mohandhas was suspended for allegedly failing to control illegal liquor sales in the Tiruvottiyur area of Chennai. In Dindigul district, Palani taluk sub-inspector Rajagopal was suspended for allegedly sending obscene images and making sexual advances to a woman who had lodged a complaint.
