Kolkata: West Bengal’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has issued a summons to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is also Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s son-in-law, in connection with a complaint alleging forged signatures of party MLAs on a letter.
The complaint relates to a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretary in support of appointing TMC MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the opposition leader. The matter surfaced after differences were reportedly noticed between a senior leader’s signature made at the time of taking oath as an MLA and the signature appearing on the support letter.
Following the complaint filed at Hare Street police station on behalf of the Assembly Secretary, CID officials questioned TMC MLAs including Nayana Banerjee, Chandranath Sinha, Kunal Ghosh and Baharul Islam. Investigators later decided to question Abhishek Banerjee, citing his alleged involvement in the opposition leader selection process.
CID officers visited Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road to serve the summons, and later delivered it at another address on Kalighat Road after he was not found at the first location. The notice asks him to appear for questioning at 12 noon tomorrow.
Abhishek Banerjee said the summons was politically motivated and claimed he had faced probes by multiple agencies in the past. He added that he would fully cooperate with the current investigation.
Separately, during a visit to Sonarpur South to meet the family of a Trinamool worker affected by post-election violence, locals reportedly surrounded his vehicle, raised slogans and threw stones, footwear and eggs. Security personnel escorted him away, and tension was reported in the area.
