The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, on Saturday said the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala in the next three to four days.

In its bulletin, the RMC noted an atmospheric circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Kerala, between about 3.1 km and 5.8 km above sea level.

For May 31 and June 1, heavy rain with thunder and strong winds is likely at isolated places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Karur, Tiruchi, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram. Puducherry may also receive heavy rain with thunder on May 31.

For June 2 and 3, similar conditions are expected in Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai. On June 4, heavy rain with thunder and strong winds may occur over the hilly areas of Tirunelveli and in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari.

The RMC also said high temperatures combined with high humidity could cause discomfort at a few places in coastal districts. Chennai and its suburbs are expected to remain partly cloudy, with a chance of light thundershowers in a few areas; maximum temperature may hover around 40–41°C and minimum around 29–30°C.
