Washington: The US Treasury is working on sample designs for a new $250 banknote that would feature President Donald Trump’s portrait, timed to coincide with the country’s 250th Independence anniversary.

In the United States, no living president has previously appeared on a dollar note. Since current law does not permit a living person’s image on US currency, a bill seeking to amend the rule has been introduced in both chambers of Parliament.

The report also notes that Patricia Solimen, the director of the currency printing division who opposed the plan, was recently replaced.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department has asked the printing division to keep model designs ready so the note could be issued quickly if the legal change is approved. He added that any rollout would be implemented only after Parliament’s approval and in line with the law.

Officials said one of the proposed designs will be finalised as the process moves forward.
