Chennai: Tamil Nadu Police have formed joint action teams to prevent crimes against women and children by bringing together existing specialised units and a newly created special force.
The Women and Children Crime Prevention Wing, headed by Additional DGP Anita Hussain, has been functioning in the state and coordinates with women’s police stations, the anti-human trafficking unit, the women’s crime investigation wing, special juvenile units and child welfare wings.
Following the change in administration, a new special commando-style unit named the “Singa Pen” special force has been created under IG Bhavaneeswari, with a focus on preventing crimes against women.
Police officials said investigators handling crimes against women and children are already coordinated across Tamil Nadu, and that effective control of such offences requires the Singa Pen force to work alongside them.
To enable this, joint action teams have been constituted and supervisory officers have also been appointed, officials added.
