Chennai: The DMK is reportedly planning to boycott by-elections in four Assembly constituencies, while choosing to contest only the Trichy East seat.
According to the report, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader and Chief Minister Vijay won from two constituencies—Chennai Perambur and Trichy East—in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. He later resigned as MLA from Trichy East, triggering a by-election there.
In addition, four AIADMK MLAs—Maragatham (Madurantakam), Jayakumar (Perundurai), Sathyabama (Dharapuram) and Isakki Subbiah (Ambasamudram)—resigned from their posts and joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. This has led to by-elections being required in five constituencies.
The report said DMK leader M K Stalin, Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi and party functionaries recently held discussions on the party’s strategy. It was reportedly decided that the DMK must contest Trichy East, where its candidate Inigo Irudhayaraj had finished second, but avoid the other four seats where the party (and Congress in Ambasamudram) had previously lost to the AIADMK.
