Iran has announced that it is pausing its peace talks with the United States, condemning Israel’s strikes on Lebanon. The move comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following continued Israeli military action.
The situation in Lebanon remains volatile, with Israel carrying out repeated attacks. After the Israeli government ordered fresh strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, regional tensions escalated further, prompting Iran to publicly halt the talks.
In Washington, President Donald Trump said the peace process with Iran is still progressing quickly and suggested an agreement could be reached as early as next week.
Trump also said he spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the ongoing bombardment. In a statement, Trump said he urged Netanyahu not to launch a major attack on Beirut and claimed Israeli forces were pulled back from Lebanon.
Trump added that he spoke with representatives of Hezbollah leaders, saying they agreed to stop firing at Israel and its soldiers, and that Israel also agreed to stop firing at them. He said it remains to be seen how long the understanding will hold, but expressed hope it would last.
