The Union government on Sunday appointed five new judges to the Supreme Court, including Tamil Nadu senior advocate V. Mohana from Coimbatore.
The appointments come after Parliament passed an amendment to raise the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, with the aim of speeding up the disposal of pending cases.
Following the change, the Supreme Court collegium led by Chief Justice Suryakant recommended five names last week. The Centre accepted the recommendations and appointed Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Shakeel Nagu, Bombay High Court Chief Justice Sree Chandrasekhar, Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice Arun Palli.
With these inductions, the Supreme Court’s current working strength has increased to 37 judges, including the Chief Justice. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay conveyed his congratulations to Justice-designate V. Mohana.
