Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department has issued promotions to 171 officers, ending a long delay in career progression for several cadres.
Department sources said the promotions were carried out purely on eligibility and merit, and that no money was collected from officers for postings or advancement.
In earlier administrations, bribery allegations had often surfaced around transfers and securing preferred postings during promotions. Officials also pointed to court cases and other factors that had stalled promotions for more than a year.
Following a change in government, Chief Minister Vijay is said to have instructed all departments to ensure transparency in promotions. Employees had also urged the government to clear long-pending promotion lists.
As part of the latest orders, 113 Commercial Tax Officers were promoted as Assistant Commissioners, 24 Assistant Commissioners were elevated as Deputy Commissioners, and 34 Deputy State Tax Officers were promoted as State Tax Officers, according to department sources.
