DMK is observing late leader M. Karunanidhi’s 103rd birth anniversary on Tuesday. At the party’s Youth Wing headquarters, Anbagam in Teynampet, Chennai, the DMK flag is set to be hoisted on a 75-foot flagpole.
Traditionally, the Chennai district unit of the party holds a public meeting to mark the occasion. During Karunanidhi’s time, the party would also convene its general council and a meeting of district secretaries, followed by the birthday public meeting the next day.
The event typically features leaders from alliance partners and national parties as invitees. However, the party’s recent defeat in the Assembly election and the loss of power have altered the political context.
According to the report, parties that were part of the DMK-led alliance—including the Congress, VCK, the Communists and the Muslim League—have moved towards the TVK led by Chief Minister Vijay. In this backdrop, the DMK leadership has cancelled this year’s Karunanidhi birthday public meeting.
