New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said the southwest monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around June 4.

The monsoon typically sets in over Kerala on June 1 each year and continues until September. This year, however, the onset has been delayed.

The IMD had earlier projected that the monsoon would reach Kerala by May 26, but later revised the forecast, citing the influence of El Nino-related changes over the Pacific Ocean.

In its latest update, the IMD said favourable conditions are in place for the monsoon to advance over the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu around June 4.

The department also noted that monsoon activity is expected to strengthen over several parts of the Bay of Bengal, which could bring rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
