Namakkal Corporation staff were caught in a bribery case after a resident complained that money was demanded to process house tax assessment for a newly built home.

According to the complaint, Boopathi (44) of Siluvampatti had applied at the Namakkal Corporation office to have tax assessed for his new house. A revenue assistant, Udhayakumar, allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 as a bribe.

After negotiations, the amount was allegedly reduced to Rs 15,000. Boopathi is said to have paid Rs 7,000 as the first instalment and told the official he would pay the balance later.

Boopathi then approached the Namakkal Vigilance and Anti-Corruption police. Acting on their instructions, he handed over Rs 8,000 treated with chemical powder at the Corporation office on Monday.

Police said Udhayakumar passed the money to Kala, a temporary sanitation worker from N. Kosavampatti who was present there. Officers who were lying in wait arrested both Udhayakumar and Kala.
