Political leaders from Tamil Nadu and other southern states have begun making frequent trips to the famed Kamakhya Devi temple in Guwahati, Assam, turning the visits into a talking point.

The temple is located on Nilachal Hill, west of Guwahati, and is regarded as one of the oldest and most revered among the 51 Shakti Peethas. It is also seen as a key centre of Tantric Shakti worship, drawing devotees from across India.

In recent months, the flow of visitors from the south—especially politicians—has reportedly increased. Karnataka leader D K Shivakumar, who is set to take charge as Chief Minister, is described as a devoted follower who is said to visit the shrine about once a month, and is believed to attribute his political rise to the deity’s blessings.

In Tamil Nadu, BJP’s former state president K Annamalai’s supporters say he tends to take major decisions only after praying at the temple. He recently visited the shrine in Guwahati before travelling to Delhi.

Sources also claim that MPs from parties including the DMK, AIADMK and Congress visit the temple regularly. AIADMK MP M Thambidurai is said to have offered prayers there with his family a few days ago.
