The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain in Kanyakumari district for today and tomorrow. A yellow alert for heavy rain has also been announced for 15 districts across Tamil Nadu.
According to the bulletin, heavy rain is likely in the hilly areas of Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, and in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai.
For June 5 and 6, the weather office said isolated places in the hilly areas of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore may receive heavy to very heavy rain (orange alert). It also forecast heavy rain with thunder, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places in Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Erode, Salem, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.
On June 7 and 8, Kanyakumari may see heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations, while the hilly areas of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, along with Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Dindigul and Theni may receive heavy rain with thunder and lightning.
The bulletin also warned of squally winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, over the Tamil Nadu coastal areas, the Gulf of Mannar and the Kumari Sea from tomorrow until June 6, advising fishermen not to venture into these waters.
