Tamil Nadu is preparing to hold local body elections in March 2027, and the State Election Commission (SEC) has instructed that ward delimitation work be completed at the earliest.
A meeting of the Delimitation Commission was held at the Election Commission office under State Election Commissioner and Delimitation Commission Chairperson Jyothi Nirmala Sami. The panel reviewed the progress of boundary re-drawing and related tasks.
The discussions covered fixing the number of elected members and reworking ward boundaries for 11 district panchayats, 40 panchayat unions and 177 village panchayats. The chairperson directed officials to expedite the process.
Based on the exercise, the commission is expected to finalise the member strength for these local bodies and submit recommendations to the government.
In Tamil Nadu, village local bodies are currently being administered by special officers after the term of elected representatives ended. For newly created districts and urban local bodies, the tenure of representatives runs until February 2027, and the SEC is planning elections the following month after delimitation is completed.
