Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay has announced that the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu will be allotted to the Congress party.

The vacancy arose after AIADMK former minister C.V. Shanmugam, who was serving as a Rajya Sabha MP, won the Mayilam Assembly constituency in the state elections and subsequently resigned from his MP post. The by-election to fill the seat is scheduled to be held on June 18.

With the ruling Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) having the numbers, its nominee was seen as having a strong chance in the election. However, Congress— which supported the formation of the TVK government—had also been expecting the Rajya Sabha berth.

In this backdrop, former Union minister P. Chidambaram met the Chief Minister at the Secretariat on Monday. On Tuesday, Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar met Vijay and sought the seat for the party.

Following these discussions, Vijay announced that the seat would be allocated to Congress. The party is expected to announce its candidate soon.
