Madurai: TASMAC employees have raised concerns over the promotion counselling being conducted on June 4 across regional offices, alleging that the process is being carried out by officials without the knowledge of the newly appointed minister.

According to staff, the State has been running TASMAC retail outlets since 2003. Over the years, supervisors, salespersons and assistant salespersons were recruited with specified educational qualifications and deposits.

They recalled that after 500 shops were shut in 2018, a selection process was held to absorb displaced shop workers into ministerial roles. Around 8,000 graduate-qualified shop employees reportedly took part, and 500 were appointed as junior assistants in TASMAC.

Employees now claim that more than 1,000 assistant posts are vacant, but the number has been shown as only 200, citing earlier government orders. They allege promotions are being planned only for 200 people, leaving over 300 similarly qualified junior assistants affected.

The staff have demanded that the counselling be cancelled and that promotions be granted without bias by filling assistant posts through a transparent process.
