Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of 717 liquor shops located within a 500-metre radius of places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands.

Chief Minister Vijay had issued the directive on May 12, asking that the closures be completed within two weeks. District managers of TASMAC have been carrying out the process.

However, delays in accurately measuring distances meant that only 620 shops had been shut as of yesterday.

Following a review meeting held yesterday with Prohibition and Excise Minister Vignesh and senior TASMAC officials, the government instructed that the remaining shops be closed by tomorrow and that the public be informed of the closures.
