Congress on Wednesday announced that Praveen Chakravarthy will contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Tamil Nadu. The poll is scheduled to be held on June 18.

The vacancy arose after AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP C.V. Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House following his victory in the Mayilam Assembly constituency. With the ruling TVK in a strong position, the seat was widely seen as likely to go to the party.

However, Congress sought the seat as part of the alliance arrangement. Chief Minister Vijay later said the Rajya Sabha seat would be allotted to Congress, paving the way for the party to field its nominee.

Along with the Tamil Nadu candidate, Congress also announced its Rajya Sabha nominees from other states. From Karnataka, Mallikarjuna Kharge, Pawan Khera and Mansoor Ali Khan have been named.

The party further said Meenakshi Natarajan will contest from Madhya Pradesh, Neeraj Dangi from Rajasthan, and Pranav Jha from Jharkhand.
