Reports from DMK circles say supporters of party leader Udhayanidhi Stalin have raised a strong demand to “give senior office-bearers a break” and hand key organisational roles to younger leaders.
The call comes as DMK president M.K. Stalin has constituted a field study committee to identify reasons for the party’s election defeat. The panel is expected to submit its report by June 10.
According to the report, during a recent discussion held while Stalin’s family and others were on a summer break near the Kodagu hill region close to Mysuru, some leaders including former minister Mahesh urged a reshuffle. They reportedly sought deputy general secretary posts for youth, a change in the general secretary post citing Durai Murugan’s health, and the creation of an executive chairman role for Udhayanidhi.
The Udhayanidhi camp is also said to have suggested appointing one district secretary for every two Assembly constituencies and limiting senior leaders to a guidance committee. Stalin did not announce any decision then, and after returning to Chennai, he held talks at Anna Arivalayam with senior leaders including T.R. Baalu, Kanimozhi and E.V. Velu. Party sources say action, if any, may follow the field study committee’s report.
