Congress nominee Praveen Chakravarthy on Thursday filed his nomination to contest the Rajya Sabha by-election in Tamil Nadu. The nomination was submitted in Chennai on June 5 in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay.

The bypoll has been necessitated after C V Shanmugam, who had won from the Mailam constituency during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, resigned from his Rajya Sabha MP post. The election to fill the vacancy is scheduled for June 18.

Congress, which is in alliance with the ruling TVK government in the state, was allotted the seat by Chief Minister Vijay, who also heads TVK. Following the allotment, Praveen Chakravarthy was announced as the party’s candidate.

Senior leaders including Nivedith Awa and K V Thangabalu were present during the filing. Speaking to reporters later, Chakravarthy said he had received the opportunity due to the Chief Minister’s generosity and mercy, and pledged to raise his voice in the Rajya Sabha to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights.
