The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday raised a series of questions over complaints of irregularities at the Tiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy Temple, including allegations linked to a Rs 100 “quick darshan” system.
The court noted concerns that senior officials may have failed to monitor and prevent alleged malpractice. The issue comes amid reports of a Rs 25 lakh fraud involving darshan tickets, which has triggered public controversy.
Following the allegations, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has issued orders transferring the joint and assistant commissioners.
The matter came up while persons accused of involvement approached the court seeking anticipatory bail. Justice Dhanapal asked what steps officials had taken to stop the irregularities, what specific allegations were against the bail applicants, the temple’s income and accounting practices, and the daily footfall of devotees.
The court directed that a report be filed by June 8 and adjourned the hearing.
