Former BJP Tamil Nadu state president K. Annamalai on June 5 launched a new political party named “We the Leaders”, saying he wanted to begin a “new path” with a fresh vision. He also reiterated that his party would contest the next general election in Tamil Nadu.
According to figures shared by the party, membership registrations began at 12 noon and surged quickly. Within the first hour, about 1.10 lakh people had signed up.
By around 7 pm, registrations were reported to have crossed 7.50 lakh. The count later crossed the 10 lakh mark, reaching 10,07,187 by 10.20 pm.
The report said Annamalai has significant support among youth, and that young people and his supporters were joining the new party in large numbers.
In parallel, several BJP office-bearers in different districts were reported to have resigned following Annamalai’s exit. Those named include BJP IT wing state secretary Vishnuprasad, Chennai functionary Vinoth, Ramanathapuram functionary Senthilkumar, and Coimbatore South district BJP president Chandrasekar. BJP state vice-president K. Nagarajan also announced his resignation and said he would join Annamalai’s new party.
