The Tamil Nadu government on Friday informed the Madras High Court that the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has registered a case over alleged irregularities in recruitments in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.
The allegations relate to appointments made during 2024–25, including posts such as assistant and junior engineer, totalling 2,538 vacancies. The complaint claims that bribes amounting to ₹634 crore were collected in connection with these recruitments.
The matter reached the High Court after the Enforcement Directorate wrote to the state DGP on October 27 last year seeking registration of a case. Separate petitions were later filed by Madurai resident Adhinarayanan and AIADMK MP Inbathurai, following which the court on February 20 directed the DVAC to register a case and proceed as per law.
Subsequently, a contempt petition was filed alleging non-compliance with the court’s direction. Review petitions were also moved by former DMK minister Nehru and the state government. During a hearing before a bench led by Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arulmurugan, the Advocate General said the FIR copy had not been filed and that the government had decided to withdraw its review plea.
The bench later ordered that no further action be taken by the state until June 23, noting that keeping further proceedings in the DVAC case in abeyance would not prejudice the government. The court also directed that the matters be listed on that date.
