London: India has condemned an incident described as disrespectful during an event in the UK attended by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
The CJI is on a six-day visit to Britain, taking part in programmes at legal and academic institutions focused on technology, law and global governance.
During a session at Birkbeck, University of London, he was speaking on the use of artificial intelligence in the modern world when an audience member attempted to raise concerns about safeguarding India’s democratic values in the AI era.
Event organisers intervened, saying the programme was strictly focused on AI technology and that other questions would not be permitted. A video of the exchange later circulated widely on social media.
In a statement, the Indian High Commission in London said such “uncivil” behaviour by members of the audience was unacceptable, adding that while differences of opinion are natural in a democratic society, they must be expressed in a civil and respectful manner.
