The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain in parts of the Nilgiris and the hilly areas of Coimbatore district on Friday (June 6).

In its bulletin, the weather office said heavy to very heavy rain may occur at one or two places in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore’s hill regions. It also warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds at isolated locations across several districts, including the hill areas of Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, and districts such as Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar and Kanniyakumari.

For Saturday (June 7), heavy rain with thunder, lightning and gusty winds is likely at one or two places in 14 districts: the hill areas of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore, along with Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Madurai and Virudhunagar.

The RMC added that similar conditions may continue on June 8 in isolated places over the hill areas of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore, and districts including Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Kanniyakumari, Erode and Salem.

It also noted that with high temperatures and high humidity, discomfort may be felt at a few places in coastal Tamil Nadu on June 6.
