A close contest is said to be shaping up for the post of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, with MP and Congress Working Committee member Manickam Tagore and data analytics and management wing head Praveen Chakravarthy emerging as key contenders.

According to information doing the rounds, the current TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai is expected to step down after his daughter’s wedding, scheduled to be held in Chennai on June 18.

The party’s central leadership is reportedly keen on appointing a state chief who can coordinate with Chief Minister Vijay and secure seat-sharing for the Congress on a merit basis for upcoming elections.

This is seen as important in the context of by-elections in five constituencies, including Tiruchirappalli East, and the forthcoming local body polls.

Sources claim both Tagore and Chakravarthy feature on a shortlist prepared by the high command, intensifying the competition for the top post in the state unit.
