Amid global economic uncertainty, the Union government is said to be preparing a reshuffle of the Council of Ministers to strengthen delivery and push reforms. Political observers say changes could come within the next few weeks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his third term with the current Cabinet on June 9, 2024, and no reshuffle has taken place so far. However, sources indicate that a reorganisation is now being considered as part of a performance-focused reset.

The reshuffle is expected to involve 10 to 12 key portfolios, including Railways and Finance. Reports say some ministers could be dropped, while others may see their departments reassigned.

With Assembly elections due next year in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, the timing is also being viewed through an electoral lens. Speculation continues over who may exit and who may enter, with decisions believed to rest with the Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Among the names being discussed, Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is seen as a potential focus, with the possibility of retaining one portfolio or being moved. Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who played a key role in coordinating India’s G20 summit, is also being seen as a likely entrant.

Opposition parties have been pressing for action against Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations linked to the NEET paper leak and issues in CBSE results, and reports suggest his position could be at risk. Separately, BJP’s “one person, one post” principle and recent organisational appointments may open space for new faces, with observers also expecting greater opportunities for leaders aged 40–50 and possible redeployment of some senior ministers above 70 to party roles.

NDA allies such as JD(U), TDP and NCP are also said to be seeking higher representation, raising the possibility of more Cabinet-level roles for coalition partners.
