Hindu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath on Saturday said his party is pursuing all steps through lawful means to obtain permission to light the lamp at the Deepathoon in Thiruparankundram.

Referring to remarks attributed to Minister Nirmal Kumar, Sampath alleged that the government intends to continue the approach followed by the previous DMK administration on the issue. He claimed such a stance amounts to contempt of court.

Sampath further alleged that Murugan devotees were subjected to suppression earlier and that permission to light the lamp was not granted even after a court verdict. He said the present administration led by Chief Minister Vijay and the TVK is also indicating that the same approach will continue.

Calling the minister’s comments hurtful to devotees’ sentiments, Sampath said his party would continue to fight in a democratic manner while seeking relief through legal channels to ensure the lamp is lit this year.
