Madurai: Minister Nirmalkumar said the government will look into complaints alleging irregularities in the deposit of gold belonging to temples, and will take action if the allegations are found to be true.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, he said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister has been inspecting preparations for the consecration (Kumbabhishekam) of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. He added that discussions have been held on conducting the event, and officials are assessing pending works and planning to proceed as scheduled.

On the conduct of rituals in the Tamil tradition at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, the minister noted that a related case is pending in court. He said there is no general barrier to conducting rituals in Tamil in temples, and that reviews are under way regarding allegations of irregularities.

Referring to complaints about issues during the previous administration, he said there are allegations of irregularities specifically in the process of depositing temple gold. The government is examining what rules were followed, how the deposited gold was used, whether deposits were made in haste, and whether financial irregularities occurred.

He reiterated that if the inquiry establishes wrongdoing, appropriate action will be taken.
