Thanjavur: Hindu Makkal Katchi on Sunday announced it would file a contempt of court case against Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar in connection with the Thiruparankundram hill Deepam pillar lighting issue.

In a statement, the party’s state general secretary Gurumoorthy criticised the minister’s reported remarks that the court’s order would not be implemented and that the situation would remain as it was two years ago. The party said such comments were unacceptable.

The statement further alleged that the ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam government appeared to be acting against Hindu devotees without fully understanding the court verdict. It argued that a law minister publicly saying the judgment would not be implemented amounted to irresponsible conduct and contempt of court.

The party demanded that Chief Minister Vijay remove Nirmal Kumar from the law minister post. It also said it would proceed with a contempt petition against the minister for comments that, it claimed, cast doubt on worship rights.
