Power Minister Nirmal Kumar on Sunday said the electricity department will soon recruit 15,000 people in the first phase as part of efforts to address staffing gaps.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the minister said the department is facing heavy workload and an overall shortage of about 70,000 employees. Steps are being initiated to begin the selection process for the first batch of recruits.

He also said promotions that had been pending for years are being cleared. Recently, 300 assistant engineers were promoted as executive engineers, and the minister described it as a long-delayed move after nearly 15 years.

According to him, even after court orders, some promotions had not been implemented earlier. He said the department has started resolving various pending employee-related issues and that further rounds of promotions will follow as part of reforms in the electricity board.
