The investigation into the theft of hard disks from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) headquarters in Chennai has been transferred to the Crime Branch-CID (CBCID), police said.

The stolen devices reportedly contained tender-related documents. The development comes as the CBI has already registered a case over an alleged Rs 397-crore irregularity in transformer procurement at the electricity board.

An engineer, Malarvizhi, detected the missing hard disks on May 20 and informed senior officials. An internal inquiry by TNEB officials indicated the theft likely occurred over the weekend of May 16 and 17, when only a limited number of staff were on duty.

Following a police complaint, two persons—Gopinath and Murali Manohar—were arrested. Based on their statements, police said 34 hard disks were seized from Bengaluru.

With the inquiry expanding beyond Tamil Nadu and involving suspects from multiple locations, Chennai Police recommended the transfer to the DGP, after which the case was handed over to the CBCID.
