West Bengal Police have arrested five members of a single family for allegedly entering India illegally from Bangladesh and living in the state for around 13 years.
According to police, the arrested include Ujir Ali (43), his wife Jainur (36) and their three sons. The family is said to be originally from Chapai Nawabganj district in Bangladesh.
Investigators said Ujir Ali crossed the India–Bangladesh border illegally about 13 years ago and later settled in Sagardighi. Police said he worked as a mason in various parts of South India to earn a livelihood.
Police further alleged that after arriving in India, he obtained a voter ID and other government identity documents using forged papers. The five have been taken into custody and are being sent to a detention centre after completion of legal procedures, officials said.
