Parents have alleged that several private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are collecting MBBS fees in violation of National Medical Commission (NMC) norms, while the Directorate of Medical Education has failed to act on complaints.

According to the allegations, the government-fixed tuition fee for MBBS in private colleges is up to Rs 13.5 lakh. However, institutions are said to collect additional annual charges—such as hostel, food and transport—amounting to as much as Rs 20 lakh from students.

Parents also claim that colleges collect “donations” of around Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in ways that are not reflected in accounts. They further allege that many colleges continue to collect fees for up to five years.

The NMC has reportedly directed that fees should be collected only for 4.5 years, as the remaining one year is an internship period during which no tuition fee should be charged and students should be paid a stipend. Parents say that even after submitting complaints to the Directorate, no action has been taken.
