A junior engineer attached to Tiruppur Corporation’s Nallur Third Zone was arrested on Monday by the district vigilance and anti-corruption wing for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.

According to the complaint, Murugan (53), a contractor from Tiruppur, had taken up road and related works in the zone. He submitted three bills for completed and ongoing works for scrutiny.

The junior engineer, identified as Subramaniyan (52), allegedly demanded Rs 8.40 lakh as illegal gratification to clear the bills and asked for Rs 5 lakh as the first instalment.

Murugan approached the Tiruppur district anti-corruption police, following which a trap was arranged. Officials caught the engineer red-handed while receiving the money, arrested him, and seized the bribe amount.
