New Delhi: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday described tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda as a “guiding light” for social justice and inclusive development.
Marking Birsa Munda’s death anniversary, the Vice President garlanded his statue in Delhi and said Munda’s life and sacrifice continue to inspire the nation’s pursuit of empowerment and dignity for all.
Radhakrishnan recalled that Birsa Munda attained martyrdom on this day in 1900 and led a historic tribal movement against British colonial rule in the late 19th century. He said courage, self-respect and a deep commitment to social justice defined Munda’s legacy.
Referring to the landmark Ulgulan movement, the Vice President said it awakened resistance against oppression and encouraged tribal communities to safeguard their rights, identity and dignity. He also noted that he had earlier had opportunities to pay homage at Ulihatu, Birsa Munda’s birthplace, both on the day he assumed office as Jharkhand Governor and after becoming Vice President.
He added that Birsa Munda’s ideals remain a lasting source of inspiration for future generations and a beacon for the country’s goals of social justice, empowerment and inclusive growth.
