Tamil cinema saw a fresh wave in the late 1970s as director Bharathiraja and composer Ilaiyaraaja rose almost simultaneously. Both hailed from the Theni region, and their shared roots and artistic sensibilities soon turned into a creative friendship that would leave a lasting mark on film music.

The association began when Bharathiraja visited Pannaipuram and met Ilaiyaraaja along with Gangai Amaran and Bhaskar. Their bond grew through shared musical journeys, including performances linked to public platforms and theatre work, eventually connecting with ‘Annakili’ Selvaraj as well.

After Ilaiyaraaja gained wide recognition with the 1976 hit Annakili, Bharathiraja signed him for his debut film 16 Vayathinile (1977). The collaboration continued across most of Bharathiraja’s films, with Ilaiyaraaja’s music often conveying emotions and narrative beats that complemented the director’s dialogues and visuals.

Among their celebrated works, Muthal Mariyathai is remembered as a jewel in Bharathiraja’s filmography, with songs and background score widely regarded as the film’s emotional core. The duo’s final film together was Nadodi Thendral; though they did not collaborate afterward, the songs they created together continue to be spoken of across generations.
