Director Bharathiraja is widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s defining voices, credited with giving Tamil films a distinct place on the Indian screen. The filmmaker is also known for introducing and shaping the careers of several artistes who later became prominent across South Indian cinema.
While actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were introduced by K. Balachander, the report notes that Bharathiraja played a key role in turning them into mass superstars. In his debut film 16 Vayathinile, he cast both actors in striking roles—Kamal as “Chappani” and Rajinikanth as the antagonist “Parattai”—characters that became widely discussed beyond the actors’ own names.
As their careers later moved on separate tracks, Bharathiraja continued to work with them individually. He directed Kamal Haasan in films such as Sigappu Rojakkal and Tik Tik Tik, and cast Rajinikanth in Kodi Parakkuthu.
The director is also remembered for his distinctive approach to heroines, often introducing several actresses—many with names starting with the letter “R”—and for launching multiple actors and technicians. The report highlights his protégés, including K. Bhagyaraj, Manivannan, Manobala and others, and notes that cinematographer B. Kannan was a key collaborator who handled the visuals for many of Bharathiraja’s films.
