The Tamil Nadu Police’s “Lioness” Special Task Force has begun operations, with teams deployed across all districts, according to IG Bhavaneeswari.
She said 70 teams are currently functioning, and the strength will be expanded to a total of 270 teams. In Chennai, two teams have been placed under each Deputy Commissioner, while Avadi and Tambaram have four teams each.
A dedicated control room has been set up to enable the unit to function independently, with enhanced monitoring through available facilities. The IG noted that social media has been causing significant harm to women, including severe mental stress, and said justice would be ensured for any affected woman.
Crime prevention will be the unit’s top priority, followed by further action, she said. Helpline numbers 100, 112 and 1091 are being used for the Lioness Special Task Force.
Funds have been allocated to procure 49 drones, which will be purchased soon, along with training for personnel. Drones will be used especially at night in areas that are difficult to access, and surveillance will also be carried out in plainclothes, she added.
