Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday set a new milestone by becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of India, surpassing the record held by the country’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, and has continued in office since then. As of June 10, 2026, he has completed 4,399 days in the post, edging past Nehru’s 4,398 days.

The report noted that Modi had earlier crossed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s record for the longest continuous stint in office on July 25, 2026. Indira Gandhi served 4,078 days as Prime Minister.

A list of tenure lengths cited in the report places Modi at 4,399 days, followed by Nehru (4,398), Indira Gandhi (4,078), Manmohan Singh (3,657) and Atal Bihari Vajpayee (2,257), among others.
